Lake Butler Rotarians Learn about Bees at their Weekly Meeting on April 18th

Article Submitted by Ted Barber

During this week’s Lake Butler Rotary Club meeting, the members enjoyed a presentation about honey bees. Lindsey Androlevich, the Union County Future Farmers of America Advisor and Ag Teacher, provided an FFA Team consisting of Ashley Harris, Tori Wilkins, and Kasey Rhodes. The project about bees and their affect upon our county, our state and upon our world was enlightening. The honey industry is worth 20 billion dollars a year and pollination is critical to the production of plants that our livestock consumes. Fear of bee stings and loss of cell phone because of their adverse effect on honey production are a couple of reasons people are complacent about the 30% annual loss of honey producing bees each year from pesticides and disease. The FFA group project was very informative and appreciated by the Lake Butler Rotary Club.

As a community update, Ted Barber thanked Nancy Griffis and the Interact Club for gathering the names of former County military men and women for the UC Times and for Kaitlyn Reed to read at the May 29, 2017 Memorial Day Ceremony. Dan Sikes, Veteran, former member of the FLANG, and local attorney, will be the guest speaker. The Ceremony will be held at 325 West Main Street (across Main Street from TD Bank) at 9:30 AM on Monday, May 29, 2017. Upcoming Rotary Program Chairpersons include Phillip Pritchett/ Billy McGill introducing Ben Campen April 25, 2017, Billy Ray Foister on May 2, 2017, Jennie Reed May 9, Scott Roberts May 16 and Zack Smith May 23.
