Article by Ted Barber
Fifteen Rotarians and one guest enjoyed fellowship, a fine meal, and an outstanding guest speaker. Pam Whittle of North Florida Chamber of Commerce provided a very informative talk about business development, land use and the expected growth in the Union, Bradford and SW Clay County Area. Pam encouraged the Lake Butler Rotarians to join in on the Chamber Breakfast Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Willows Restaurant in the Lake Butler Hospital. This “eye opener” breakfast meeting will provide what to expect in our community as we approach 2030 (more people and businesses moving in and the affects they will create). Growth is coming! Pam also encouraged us as concerned citizens to take advantage of the Chamber’s free workshops. We talked about the school consolidations and the Starke bypass to name a few issues on the minds of our Lake Butler Rotarians.
Kellie Connell gave Russ Wade a “Gold Star” for answering correctly the question, “In what month is the earth closest to the sun?” Art Peterson thought he had the star, but Russ trumped him with “January”. We also learned that President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Mother’s Day Holiday in 1914.
Ted Barber made a motion that we have our Lake Butler Rotary Club check book and bank statements audited so that we could see our current financial status and prepare our 2017-2018 Club Budget. This will also help us prepare for the Fourth of July Celebration, a major annual event for the Lake Butler Rotary Club. The motion passed unanimously. President Steve Wellhausen held a short Lake Butler Rotary Club Board Meeting to discuss the tasking necessary to prepare for the Fourth of July Celebration just 6 weeks away! This audit will be an internal audit conducted voluntarily by Kellie Connell, a Certified Public Accountant. The Lake Butler Rotary Club Board consisted of Steve Wellhausen, Club President, Ted Barber, Club President-elect, and Donna Harris, Sergeant at Arms/ Membership Chairperson (Diane Andrews, Secretary and Maggi Wetzel, Treasurer were not available). The Board approved the Lake Butler Rotary Club Bylaws, the closing of the Club Accounts at the Lake Butler TD Bank and moving the assets to the Community State Bank in Lake Butler as soon as possible with new Signature Cards signed by the current Board Members as signatories. The Fourth of July tasking includes Dave Mecusker in charge of contracts for fireworks and vendors (includes the booths). Steve Wellhausen will handle the pavilion entertainment to include the water slides and other children attractions. Zack Smith will handle the fishing tournament. Carlton Faulk will head up the “Fun Run/Walk”. Jennie Reed will handle the classic and antique car show, and Diane Andrews will chair the Donations Committee with Jennie Reed, Ted Barber and Dave Mecusker assisting.
Upcoming programs include May 16-Scott Roberts, May 23- Zack Smith, May 30- Community Update/ Fourth of July Updates, June 6- Tommy Spires, June 13-Tony Sweat.
