Lake Butler Rotary Meeting Review from Tuesday, October 10, 2017

Article by Ted Barber

Shane Collins, the Club Program Manager, placed one of Christopher Reeve’s quotes on the back of the October 10 Program that said, “So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.” On October 10, 2004 this man died after being paralyzed in 1995 from an equestrian accident. Christopher Reeves became a true hero based upon his inner strength to direct, author and advocate for spinal cord research.

Donna Harris presented a valuable program entitled, “Your Day Your Way” that is designed as a planning record and guide regarding funerals. Unfortunately, many people pass on with no preparation to help their family and loved ones. Too often confusion and discord presents a stressful situation on top of the loss. My personal take on this valuable program Donna presented is to sit down with my wife and complete the free packet Donna provided so that we can have “Our Day Our Way!”

Prior to the Program, the Rotarians were asked how many trees they had planted since we were challenged July 1, 2017 by Brent Coates. The tally came up with 20 as of October 10th or 80 percent of our membership had credit for planting at least one tree prior to April 22, 2018 (Earth Day).

Joe Stephenson came up with an excellent recruitment/money-maker for local and international community projects to help others. Basically, we will have a “Hit List” of potential Rotarians that will be arrested by the UCSO each Tuesday morning prior the Rotary Club’s noon luncheon meetings. They will be given an option of attending the Club Meeting or paying a fine/ donation to one of our community projects. The local newspaper and Lake Butler Community Page will publish their mug shots. The rules need to be finalized and Joe will have this program going in the near future.

We also voted to send a donation to help the hurricane victims based upon a partnership with a reliable 100% provider.

Our October 17 Meeting features Paul Lewis’ guest, Mike Ridaught who will provide us with the new Florida High School Athletic Association’s football playoff rules.
