Rotary Club Meeting News, from October 31, 2017

Article by Ted Barber, Lake Butler Rotary President

Following a fantastic luncheon meal catered by the Spires Catering Service, Art Peterson introduced Anna Woods who presented the Rotarians the opportunity to assist the Union County Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (UC JROTC). On the morning of November 4, 2017, our JROTC is hosting and competing against eleven other high schools JROTC students. Our JROTC Raider Team wants to qualify at this Area 1 Meet for the State Competition on December 9, 2017 in Sarasota. There are 5 Cross-Fit Events to include a 5K Run, a 500 pound tire flip, an obstacle Course, a simulated rescue and the construction of a one-rope bridge. This competition begins at 7:00 AM and should be concluded by 2:00 PM. The UC JROTC expects to send 2 Teams to the State Finals with an entry fee of $200 ($100 per team). The cost for food and lodging are extra. Please come out and enjoy the competition, have something to eat and drink from the concessions which also help donate money to the JROTC Teams, and lend your support. Anna Woods asks that the donations be dropped off at the UCHS front office.

The JROTC has a planned annual Veterans Administration Hospital Visit where donated items like hair brushes, new clothing, postal stamps and crafts will be presented. Again the drop off location is the UCHS front office.

Anna Woods has a raffle with many gifts from the Bass Pro Shop worth $300 for $5.00 per ticket that are also available in the UCHS front office. The winner will be drawn on Veteran’s Day, Saturday, November 11, 2017.

Ted thanked the Club Members for supporting the World Polio Day with a donation of $200 from the Club with our “Brown Bag” luncheon October 24th plus other personal donations. He thanks Interact Staff Advisor Nancy Griffis and Sheriff Brad Whitehead for allowing us to hear Sergeant Alton Thornton’s personal story of his dealing with polio.

The Veterans Day Celebration hosted by the UCHS begins Friday, November 10, 2017 at the UCHS Football Field. All able bodied Veterans (we have 2,340 UC Veterans) should arrive between 8:30 am and 8:55 am since the program begins at 9:00 AM. The Booster parking lot and east gate are designated for the Veterans.

The park bench honoring Norman Stephenson with a dedication plaque should be in place by Veterans’ Day Saturday, November 11, 2017. Our Lake Butler Rotary Club has two new trash receptacles anchored on the Lake Butler cement pier to help keep our lake clean thanks to Tommy Spires, Steve Welhausen, our Club and the City of Lake Butler.

Our Rotary Theme for November is the “Rotary Foundation” often called the “TRF”. Our District 6970 is number one in the world for its donations. Individual contributions are made through the Paul Harris Fellow, the Paul Harris Society, Sustaining Members, Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY), End Polio, and bequests.

November 7 is our Community Update where each Rotarian provides information about our    community and the business they represent.
