Lake Butler Rotary Club
January 9, 2018 Meeting

A great lunch began at 12:00 Noon with Spires Catering fried chicken, pulled pork, salad, Mac and cheese, and banana pudding. Many slices of banana were found in the pudding!

Appropriate to the ending of 2017, Art Peterson lead the Club singing “Auld Lang Syne”, the Scottish poem written by Robert Burns and put to music that bids farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. On behalf of the members of the Lake Butler Rotary Club, I wish you all a Happy and Blessed New Year.

Introductions of our guests included Bob Driggers, Mike Stephenson, Mary Brown, and Tricia Wylie. Tricia Wylie talked briefly about the three county libraries in the cooperative pointing out Union County’s Jimmy Tallman and Karen Cossey as our County Board Members. Tricia Wylie requested that she be activated as a member of the Lake Butler Rotary Club and the members of the Club Board approved her request. Tricia will be introduced as a member of the Lake Butler Rotary Club and presented her welcome packet at our Tuesday, January 16, 2018 noon luncheon meeting.

The election of our July 1, 2018 Club Officers was unanimous for Donna Harris, President, Brad Whitehead, President-elect, Tony Sweat, Secretary, Kellie Connell, Treasurer, and Shane Collins, sergeant at Arms/Membership Chairmen. Their induction will be accomplished at our June 26, 2018 Meeting.

Joe Stephenson presented an opportunity for our Lake Butler Rotary Club to have a “Hands On” international project utilizing a Global Rotary Grant in Nicaragua. He outlines a sustainable program providing a library with books and computers for a small school of 140 students in grades 1 through 7. We drafted an application for a Rotary International Global Grant aimed at activating in school year 2019. Much ground work is still required for the $30,000 Grant. This possible international project is an agenda items for our Club’s January 23, 2018 Board Meeting.

Our Rotary Club Banner was presented to Brent Coates, our District 6970 Governor, at our Christmas Social that followed the dedication of the Norman Stephenson Park Bench on December 21, 2017. Two more Club Banners will be presented soon to Bob Driggers, a fellow Rotarian and frequent visitor, and Joe Stephenson, our fellow Club Member and the gracious host for our first Club Social and organizer for the proposed Nicaragua project.

Ted thanked the Club for our December 27, 2017 $400 donation to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). He specifically thanked Tommy Spires, past president, for handling the 50-50 drawing, Steve Wellhausen, immediate past president, for donating the 50% he won in the drawing and Santa Clause for providing his gift.
