Tommy Spires had the weekly program, a “Community Update”. He clarified that the March 16, 2019 10th Annual Hawaiian Luau will have music furnished by Paul Lewis rather than a DJ for the entire evening. He urged the Club Members to bring in their raffle donations (at least two per member) and their table of ten ticket sales money to Shane Collins, Club Treasurer. With just a couple weeks to go Tommy urged all members to expedite their input for success. The raffle donations so far gathered were on display at the meeting and showed we have an outstanding start. The suggestion that we bring in homemade cakes for Ben Campen to auction was approved and at least 15 homemade cakes were offered by our members. Our supper meal will be terrific, but to have a homemade cakes to share at each table would be a great topping. Numbering the tables with a chart at the door was suggested by Ted Barber to expedite seating. President Peterson assigned Ted the job.
Superintendent Carlton Faulk told us about the school safety initiatives that Union County Schools has taken. Sheriff Brad Whitehead told the Club that his staff earned a phenomenal 91% uniform crime clearance rate for arrests and convictions in Union County. The average rate statewide is 26%. Brad gave Billy Townsend a lot of the credit for the great rating based upon the investigative work accomplished. City Manager Dale Walker mentioned the renovation work at the Lakeside Community Center and the Park. Ted Barber provided the name of our Memorial Day Guest Speaker- Col Danny McKnight (Ret) the author of the book, “Street of Mogadishu” (Most of us are familiar with the term, “Blackhawk Down”). Col McKnight accepted the American Legion Post 153 invitation several weeks ago. Ted gave Dale Walker the credit for allowing us this fantastic motivational speaker. McKnight should be a tremendous drawing card for honoring our military Veterans this coming Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2019 At 9:00 AM. Even the ramp and stage at 325 West Main Street will receive a facelift for the event. Ted also mention that a Flag Detail from the American Legion Post 153 (Lanny Bishop, Mitchell Bishop and Ted Barber) disposed of over 400 unserviceable American Flags that had been stuffed in the Flag Disposal Box at the Veteran’s Monument.
