Lake Butler Rotary Club Meeting Review for Tuesday, November 17, 2020

By Ted Barber

A fantastic Thanksgiving luncheon was enjoyed by the members and guests present honoring Rotarian Tommy Spires on his what would have been his 77th Birthday. Club President Shane Collins opened the meeting with a prayer and had Mike Spires lead the group with the Pledge of Allegiance. Shane then led with the opening song, “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”.
Art Peterson made a fantastic tribute for all that Tommy had done in his 35 years as a Lake Butler Rotarian. He concluded his remarks by stating that Tommy Spires epitomized the Rotarian International Motto, “Service Above Self-One Profits Most Who Serves Best”. “Generosity” was the word Ted Barber used to describe Tommy. Ted sited an example when he was the Club President where Tommy stepped up and covered the entire cost of purchasing and securing several expensive trash receptacles at the Lakeside community Center beach and pier. That act of generosity was credited to the Lake Butler Rotary Club and significantly helped keep our Lake clear of old fishing lines and trash. Nancy and Tommy opened up their home one Christmas for the Promise Keepers and their families and of course Ted said, the Blue House” which Tommy generously provided for fellowship, great food and weekly card games. Ted said he finally realized why the table in the back of the Rotary Meetings was called the “Sinner’s Table”- several regulars from the “Blue House” were always present. Being a Paul Harris Fellow carries the knowledge that Tommy provided money to the Rotary Foundation that helps Americans and people Internationally. Tommy will always be fondly remembered for his generosity. His daughter Sara added that her father had an ulterior motive for paying her dues- he wanted her to pick up the responsibilities he had with the Rotary Club. All kidding aside, Sara is an outstanding Rotarian.
