Lake Butler Rotary Club Meeting Review, from Tuesday, December 15, 2020

By Ted Barber

Our Spires IGA catered luncheon included ribs, fried chicken, mac and cheese, baked beans, tossed salad, rolls and peach cobbler. No one went away hungry!

Club President Shane Collins opened the Tuesday, December 15, 2020 meeting with Derick Thomas asking the meal blessing, Dale Walker leading the Pledge of Allegiance and Dave Mecusker starting the song “Home on the Range” that Art Peterson turned into “Jungle Bells” for the second verse. Tyler Kelley, our Sergeant at Arms, asked the “Did you Know? Question. The famous trombone player that disappeared over the English Channel in 1944 was correctly answered by Harvey Baxter as Glenn Miller. Tyler then spun the Club’s penalty wheel for Brian Reagan who had left the meeting early. The fine was just $1.00. Our guests included Rotarian Harvey Baxter, Jim Bush (guest speaker) and Mike Riplinger (to be officially inducted as a Lake Butler Rotarian Jan 5, 2021).

Our guest speaker, Jim Bush, Regional Manager for the Florida Power and Light was introduced by Derick Thomas a friend and business colleague and who holds a similar position with Clay Electric Coop. Jim provided a brief history of the Florida Power and Light and its 5 million customers. He told us that FP&L had 1600 Union County Costumers and is heavily invested in solar electric production. FP&L’s goal is to have 30 million solar voltaic panels operational by 2030 (enough panels to circle the globe several times). These solar panels will allow 67% of all electrical production to come from solar panels. With 3 billion invested in solar our utility bills will be lowered and the production of electricity will be 30% cleaner. The local Union Springs Solar Panel Array will be on line soon producing 74 Mega Watts.

Upcoming program chairpersons include: 22 and 29 December- no meetings, Jan 5- Jennie Reed, Jan 12- Dale Walker, Jan 19- Dave Mecusker, Jan 26- Kellie Rhoades, and Feb 9- Ted Barber.
