Lake Butler Rotary Club Meeting in Review, Tuesday, March 2, 2021

By Ted Barber

Club President Shane Collins had Brian Reagan ask the blessing for our luncheon meal and for our meeting. Nancy Griffis led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Art Peterson had us join in to sing “Happy Birthday” to Brad Whiteheads as our opening song.

This week’s “Did you Know?” question stumped all 20 of the Lake Butler Rotarians in attendance. The question asked what famous Florida “cracker” Cowboy in 1896 was sentenced to two years of hard labor for rustling cattle, but served no time? The judge dismissed the case since Bone Mizell, known as the “Cracker Cowboy of the Palmetto Prairies”, knew the judge himself was involved in cattle rustling.

Shane introduced Hunter Williams as this week’s guest speaker. Hunter is a senior at Union County High School, and is President of the Lake Butler Rotary sponsored Interact Club, that has students from UCHS. William’s presentation provided the Rotarians with information about the upcoming County Fairs (Union and Bradford). The Union County LIvestock Association (UCLA) was established in 2019 and it promotes good relations between Bradford and Union County students and residents. Hunter believes there will be between 100 and 125 students showing various animals at the fair, including chickens, rabbits, goats, hogs and cattle. Shane said his children spend around $170 per week feeding their animals, so this enterprise is serious business. This year Hunter expects 24 hogs, 24 steers and 46 heifers, with 12 of the heifers being put on the auction block Saturday with the hogs and steers.

Congratulations were give to fellow Rotarian Mike Ripplinger for his daughter, Abigail Ripplinger, being selected as the Strawberry Pageant Queen, and to Rotarian Carlton Faulk’s granddaughter Kadence Adams being selected as Princess. Also, Congratulations were given to Rebekah Elixson who was voted in as our newest Lake Butler Rotarian!
