Lake Butler Rotary Meeting Review for Tuesday, March 23, 2021

By Ted Barber

Club President Shane Collins opened the Lake Butler Rotary Club Tuesday, March 23, 2021 noon luncheon meeting with Art Peterson asking the Lord God’s grace on our luncheon gathering; Dale Walker leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Art’s “Home on the Range” song. Shane introduced Jonathan Jarvis a friend of Tyler Kelley and college student and Joe Mittauer, Lake Butler City Engineer. Shane made the official induction of Jody Read as our newest Lake Butler Rotarian. Our program chairperson Sara Owen introduced Tammy Still, State Representative Bobby Payne’s District assistant. Tammy discussed Florida House Bill 1 and answered many questions regarding current legislation. HB1 is designed to combat public disorder by preventing protest from escalating into riots. Several key provisions of HB1 include a 6-month jail sentence for insulting law enforcement personnel, legal sanctions against those who destroy property and/or hurt others and the withholding of state funding to municipalities failing to support law enforcement.

The “Did You Know?” question asked by Tyler Kelley was successfully answered by our newest Rotarian, Jody Read as the Titanic. The question asked which James Cameron movie won 11 Academy Awards at the Oscars in 1998?

Key questions to President Collins included: 1. Whether or not we as Lake Butler Rotarians were organizing the annual Fourth of July event for 2021? The tentative answer was “No” due to the pandemic. 2. What does the Club want done with the past Presidents Board Ted retrieved from Sporting Chance in Starke? The answer was repair and update the board so that it can be displayed in the Union County Museum or other suitable location, 3. What is the current status of the “White Crosses with American Flags” honoring Military Veterans? Nancy Griffis reached the first year limit of 50 to be honored. She got the final few entries for displaying the crosses two weeks prior and two weeks after Memorial Day 2021 and Veterans Day 2021 at the meeting, and 4. Are we as a Rotary Club sponsoring/ providing college scholarships to graduating UCHS Seniors this year? The answer President Shane provided was “Yes”.

Congratulations and best wishes to Rotarian Joe and Courtney Edwards on their recent marriage.
