On a humid Memorial Day, this past Monday, May 27, 2019, people gathered together for the annual Union County Memorial Day ceremony in Lake Butler.
Sondra Hunt, a local music personality, kicked off the ceremony by performing several of her favorite patriotic songs. The crowd enjoyed her performance and everyone stood as she performed ‘God Bless the USA’.
The guest speaker this year was Col. Danny McKnight. McKnight is the author of the book “Streets of Mogadishu,” the basis for the popular film “Black Hawk Down (1993).” He was born in Georgia in 1951 and moved to Florida in 1959. He was commissioned into the U.S. Army through the ROTC program at Florida State University in 1973. He commanded an infantry battalion twice in his career, an unusual achievement, having commanded both the 4th Battalion, 27th infantry at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii and the 3rd Ranger Battalion at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served in combat in both Panama (1989) and Somalia (1993). He retired in 2002 after more than 28 years of service and is now a motivational speaker on leadership and patriotism. He and his wife, Linda, live in Rockledge, Florida.
For those that may have been unable to attend, or would like to remember the day, David Stegall of the Lake Butler Community Page recorded the ceremony and shared the event on the Lake Butler Community Page YouTube Channel:
