Lake Butler Rotary Club Meeting in Review for Tuesday, December 10, 2019

By Ted Barber

Tommy Spires introduced Kelsey Harrison as our guest speaker for the Tuesday, December 10, 2019 luncheon meeting. She related her experiences as a White House Intern that included how she became an intern, some of her memorable experiences as an intern and her work with the nonprofit “Celebration of Abilities”. Her presentation was terrific and upbeat! She displayed a zest for life and was very comfortable telling us about the help congressman Ted Yoho provided to her to get the White House Internship and her face to face meeting with President Trump. Based upon Kelsey’s White House experiences, her education as a graduate student at the University of North Florida specializing in communications, and her nonprofit work with the “Celebration of Disabilities”, I believe Kelsey Harrison will put Lake Butler, Florida on the map one day soon again working in the White House!

Garrett Milton stumped the Lake Butler Rotary Club Rotarians once again with his “Did You Know?” Question. He asked in what year was the candy cane introduced to America? Candy canes are a part of the Christmas tradition around the world. In 1770 a German choirmaster gave candy sticks to noisy children to keep them quite during Christmas services. Another legend says the candy cane was a secret symbol of Christianity where the white symbolized Jesus’ purity, the red symbolized His shed blood as he died on the Cross at Calvary to provide redemption from sin and the “J” shape symbolized Jesus Christ. In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant decorated a small blue spruce with paper ornaments and white candy canes in Ohio. By the end of the 19th Century, the red and white stripes with peppermint flavors became the norm.

Our other guests included Keystone Heights Rotarian Derrick Thomas and Tyler Kelly.

Art Peterson is to be commended for leading us with a new and appropriate song for the season, Jingle Bells.

Our last weekly meeting for 2019 is this coming Tuesday, December 17, 2019. Joe Stephenson is working on a program for that meeting. Hopefully, Joe Edwards will have the program for January 7, 2020.

Please remember the Bobby Driggers Family, and Nadine Faulk in your prayers.
