The “Did You Know? Question asked, on this date in 1981, Bob Marley died from cancer in a Miami hospital- what contributed to his death? The correct answer was a soccer injury that helped bring on the cancer.

Thirty-four (34) years ago on May 4, 1987 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the Durante Decision (Durante Rotary Club of Durante, California) that women could become active Rotarians. Dr. Sylvia Whitlock was the Durante Club’s first woman club president. The Durante Rotary Club became honored with the title, “the mouse that roared”. Today 23% of all active Rotary Club members are women and six of the seventeen International Board members are females. The Rotary International President-elect for 2022-2023 is Jennifer Jones. She will be the first woman president of Rotary International and Dr. Whitlock who is now 86 will be present to see her installed.

Ted Barber introduced Ryan Perez, Union County Commissioner for District 1 and a Union County High School Teacher. A few weeks ago Ryan provided us an update on our County’s internet connectivity. High speed is important to our businesses, our educational system, our medical services, and our general public use. Our county commissioners are actively working on many needs to include hazardous waste disposal, tire disposal, corona virus testing and most recently our County’s 100^th Year Centennial. Commissioner Perez gave us the many entities involved in the Centennial planning which is now scheduled for 30 September 2021 to 3 October 2021. Tiger Growl is scheduled for Thursday, September 30; Homecoming is Friday October 1; Multiple events to include vendors at the Lake with fireworks on Saturday, October 2 and a county-wide church service for Sunday, October 3, 2021. Our Union County Board of Commissioners next meeting is Monday, May 17, 202. The meeting will feature the Centennial planning. The meeting begins at 6:00 PM.
