By Ted Barber
Following a great luncheon meal consisting of meatloaf and fried chicken, Art Peterson led our opening prayer, with Jenny Reed leading the group with the Pledge of Allegiance and Ted Barber leading with the opening song.
This week’s “Did You Know?” question asked, “On this date in 1977, what first triple-set cinema trilogy opens and becomes one of the most franchised and highest grossing series of all times?” Art Peterson answered with Star Wars, which was the correct answer.
The Club voted to pay the added expenses not covered by the initial $40.00 donations for the first 50 white cross/American Flag memorial markers (currently viewable along SR 121 just before the intersection with CR 231). As per Nancy Griffis, they were short by about $200.00 due to an unexpected cost in materials. Nancy reported that she has already collected $640.00 for additional crosses at an increase of $20.00 that should cover all expenses. The donation amount for each cross/flag memorial is now $60.00.
Mitchell Bishop stood in for Sara Owen as the guest speaker. He explained his plans for this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony and provided the history on items such as The Taps, the bringing of the American Flag to half-mast, and the history behind celebrating Memorial Day. As a side-note, the first Memorial Day Ceremony held in Union County was on Memorial Day, May 29, 1995. We had to borrow the Union County High School’s speaker’s platform and had no load-speaker system. Kelley Dorsey and Richard Kirkland supplied the community event with outstanding students for the flag detail and appropriate music. This year, Kelly Dorsey has come through along with LTC. Kevin Steverson in supplying student volunteers. David Stegall, Lake Butler City Commissioner and creator of the Lake Butler Community Page, is again supplying the color-printed Memorial Day Ceremony programs. The event will also be recorded by David and uploaded to the Lake Butler Community Page’s YouTube Channel for viewing (visit YoutTube.com/lakebutlercommunity). Please mark your calendars to attend and support this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony with Patriotic Music, starting at 9:45am and the Memorial itself to commence at 10:00am.
The Club voted to fill Sara Owen’s vacancy as Lake Butler Rotary Club Treasurer with Rebekah Elixson. The Past Club President’s Plaque is waiting on Tim Parks of Ink & Thread Graphics of Lake Butler to mount the letters and numbers. The finished product is expected to hopefully be complete by our second meeting in June (June 8, 2021).
Our upcoming Lake Butler Rotary Club programs: June 1 – Nancy Griffis; June 8 – Dave Mecusker; June 15 – Garrett Milton; June 22 – Carlton Faulk; June 29 – Jody Read; July 6 – Mike Ripplinger; July 13 – Jack Schenck; July 20 – Joe Stevenson; July 27 – Derick Thomas
