At our Tuesday, June 8, 2021 Lake Butler Rotary Club Meeting, we enjoyed a delicious luncheon and fellowship with Marvin Griffis, Nancy Griffis’ husband as well as Darren Elixson, Rebekah Elixson’s husband as our guests. OUr guest speakers for this week, arranged by Dave Mecusker, were Jill Fulgham, Lake Butler Hospital’s Public Relations and Radiology Director, and Tina Lloyd, Ancillary Services and Risk Management Officer. Both guest speakers explained the many services provided by our local hospital. Three of the many services that have made a major impact in Union County include the hospital’s lab, the new CT Scanner and their Rehab Therapy. The convenience factor of having these necessary diagnostic and treatment services available locally makes Lake Butler Hospital an unbelievably valuable health care facility.
This week’s “Did You Know?” question asked for the book’s name and author that was released June 8, 1949, initiating the “Big Brother” concept. George Orwell’s, “1984” was a book depicting a dystopian future where the government is an oppressive bureaucracy whose leader has an all-seeing eye on his people. George Orwell was the “Nom de Plume” of Eric Blair and author born in India. Jody Read was congratulated as the first Rotarian to come up with the correct answer.
Nancy Griffis is asking all Rotarians to lend a hand on Tuesday morning, June 15, 2021, to assist in the take-down of the 50 Patriotic White Crosses with American Flags that were displayed along SR 121. We plan to gather at Sprinkle Field at 8:30am and will be placing the crosses in alphabetical order in the trailered racks; removing the American Flags so they may be washed and moving the crosses and flags to Jody Read’s plant on SW 2nd Street in Lake Butler for storage. A week and a half prior to Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2021, we will once again place the crosses with American Flags on SR 121 for display. To date the new requests, exceed 25% of the expected 200 new Cross/Flag display goal, and we may exceed that total by the time we place them out on display again. Obviously, Union County has many patriotic citizens.
Upcoming Program Chairpersons will be: June 15 – Garrett Milton; June 22- Carlton Faulk; June 29- Jody Read; July 6- Mike Ripplinger; July 13- Jack Schenck; July 20- Joe Stephenson; July 27- Derick Thomas; August 3- Russ Wade; August 10- Dale Walker
