After an enjoyable meal shared by 13 Lake Butler rotarians, along with several guests, Secretary Tyler Kelley opened our meeting. Our prayer for the food was given by David Beatty, the Pledge was led by Becky Elixson, and Dale Walker led the club in a Bicycle built for two.
The trivia question this week was “On this day in 1953, an armistice was agreed upon, ending the fighting in the Korean War. Which countries signed the armistice?” The correct answers were China, North Korea, South Korea, and the United States.
Today’s guests were Tammy Wilkerson, of Lake Butler Middle School, a guest of Nancy Griffis, Sophia Elixson, the youngest daughter of Becky Elixson, Ryan Hart, our guest speaker, guest of Derick Thomas, and Tracy Toms, the Wellness Program Manager of the Florida Department of Health over Union and Bradford Counties.
Tracy Toms spoke to our club about the upcoming Back to School/Back to Health Expo, which will be held on August 7th at the Union and Bradford Health Departments, where they will be giving away items and literature. This is their first program since prior to the Covid Pandemic.
Derick introduced his speaker, Ryan Hart, who is representing Seminole Electric Cooperative. Seminole is a non-profit, owned by 9 different electric companies, including Clay Electric. Electric cooperatives were incorporated in the 30’s, as a way for rural communities to get electricity. They generate the electricity, and companies, such as Clay Electric, distribute it to their communities. Seminole is currently transitioning over the next three years towards natural gas and renewable energy, and away from coal.
Upcoming Programs: August 3- Becky Elixson, August 10- New Teacher Appreciation Lunch at Lake Butler Elementary School, August 17- Brad Whitehead, August 24- Harvey Baxter, August 31- Kaleb Archer, September 7- Ted Barber, September 14- Dale Walker, September 21- David Beatty, September 28- Russ Wade.
