Jennie Reed introduced Linda Johns and Debbie Dukes as her guest speakers following the August 27th Rotary noon luncheon. Linda Johns told us that the Union County School Foundation had been reactivated to support the educational goals of our County School System. As the current Foundation President Linda Johns with the help of Debbie Dukes have already secured a Clay Electric Grant with a matching grant from the State of Florida for $20,000. This money must be accounted for and used to assist teachers with classroom supplies, technology and scholarships. They are making applications forms available for the Union County Teachers and /or groups within the school system to apply to the Union County School Foundation. These sub grants have a $500 maximum for individual teachers and a $1,000 maximum for group projects. In order to reduce the donation pressure on some prominent Union County Citizens and Businesses, Linda and Debbie are searching for grants in addition to the Clay Electric Grant from large corporations doing business in Union County.
Bob Driggers and Chris Rainey joined us as guests. Bob is a Rotarian from Madison, Alabama. He told us about a recent fund raiser his Madison Club just completed. Evidently, the “Parrotheads of the Caribbean” using jimmy Buffett’s Margaretville and a lot of fun drew a crowd of between 400 and 500 supporters. Their extravaganza and silent auction raised a lot of money to help their local community and to support world-wide Rotary Projects promoting world peace and understanding while helping the less fortunate.
The “Did You Know” Question was correctly answered by Art Peterson. He came up with “Mortimer Mouse” as the original name for Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse. It was Walt’s wife Lillian that did not like the original name Mortimer Mouse.

Upcoming programs: Sept 3- Ted Barber (Garrett Milton will introduce James Williams, UC Coordinator), Sept 10- Brian Reagan will introduce our District 6970 Governor on his Official Visit, Sept 17- Art Peterson, Sept 23- Garrett Milton, Oct 1- Tony Sweat, and Oct 8- Nancy Griffis.
