With the announcement that the government would be issuing stimulus checks to Americans to help them through the COVID-19 crisis, scammers have been stepping up their game to try an swindle you out of your money.
The first thing to remember is that most people who qualify to receive the payment directly do not have to do anything. The IRS is using the direct deposit information it already has on file from when you filed your taxes. You will not be called and asked to sign up, apply or required to verify any personal information.
If you receive any phones calls, emails or other form of communication claiming to be from the U.S. Treasury Department and offering COVID-19 related grants, loans or stimulus payments in exchange for your personal financial information, these are scams. DO NOT provide your information to them. The U.S. government will never call, email or text you asking for your bank details, social security numbers or such.
