In the spirit of unity and civic involvement the Lake Butler Rotary Club (LBRC) gathered at the Lake Butler Woman’s Club (LBWC) for the annual Valentine Luncheon Invitation. Both Lake Butler clubs are affiliated with international organizations. The LBRC is part of Rotary International (RI) with over 1.2 million members worldwide and the LBWC is part of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs (GFWC) with over 100,000 members. Locally each club has around 30 members that promote education, civic involvement, as well as promoting peace and understanding. The Motto for the Woman’s Club is “We look for unity, but unity in diversity” and the Rotarian’s Motto is “Service above self, one profits most who serves best”. Both Lake Butler Clubs have been active for many years with the LBRC being chartered in 1965 and the LBWC being chartered in 1912 before Union County became a county in 1921. The current officers of the LBWC are Jean Brannen-President, Sally Keller- 1^st Vice, Cathryn Reagan- 2^nd Vice, Margaret Reeves- Secretary, Harriet Maines-Treasurer, Betty Emerick-Devotions, and Barbara Fischer- Parliamentarian. The current officers of the LBRC are Shane Collins-President, Garrett Milton-President Elect, Brian Reagan-Secretary, Sara Owen-Treasurer, and Tyler Kelley-Sergeant at Arms. Lake Butler and all of Union County should be proud of the work these two clubs perform each year.

For a little history on Saint Valentine, it is known that he was a minister of the Gospel and a physician in Rome, Italy. He and his family provided assistance to martyrs that were persecuted by Emperor Claudius II, the goth. St. Valentine was eventually arrested and condemned to die for his faith in Jesus Christ. He was beheaded on February 14, AD 270. Because of St. Valentine’s love and care for others his name became associated with our annual February 14 Valentine’s Day.
