After the small fire late last year, the Lake Butler Community Center has undergone transformation as the interior has completely been demolished. The wall board and carpeting on the walls has been taken down. Beautiful brick walls were exposed after the removal of the walls, and it is the intent of the City of Lake Butler to leave the walls exposed and not cover them up. The brick will be cleaned and seal coated.
The ceiling has been completely removed and the replacement of the electrical in the building will soon take place. Quotes have been received by the City for the replacing of insulation in the ceiling/attic space as well as the installation of new duct work for the heating/air conditioning. The City also intends to replace the older ac units for the building.
The old single pane windows of the community center will be replaced with double pane windows for better insulation. A contractor is also being sought to bring the original floor back to it’s original luster. It seems the original flooring in the community center is terrazzo flooring, which is an expensive floor, and it is able to restored to the original luster it once had. Terrazzo is a composite material, and consists of chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable material, poured with a cementitious binder.
Fortunately, the exterior of the community center is in good shape, and it will be powerwashed and a protective glaze will be applied to the brick to weatherproof it. It is the hope of the City to have the community center restoration work completed by May 2019.
